Owens Releases Statement on Recent Vote Against DISCLOSE Act

Statement

Date: June 24, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Bill Owens released the following statement regarding his vote against H.R. 5175, The Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light On Spending in Elections (DISCLOSE) Act.

"We can all agree that money has too much power in our electoral process and that our campaign finance laws are in need of serious reform. However, such reform cannot come at the cost of our First Amendment rights. While I was disappointed to see the Supreme Court's ruling in January's Citizens United v. FEC, I am uncomfortable with the DISCLOSE Act. My concern with this piece of legislation is that it encroaches too closely on an individual's right to free speech and could ultimately prohibit constructive political advocacy as well as the participation of the general public in the political process."
